Top layer111 1/4" × 11 1/4" × 1 1/2"

Step by step

  1. Prepare the two layers

Inspect the precut squares, drill the top layer and smooth handling edges.

    • Reject boards with splits, decay, loose knots or warped faces.
    • Mark 4 top layer holes, each 1 1/4" from its two nearest edges.
    • Clamp the top layer onto a sacrificial backing board.
    • Drill the 4 clearance holes with a 3/16" bit.
    • Countersink each hole just enough for a flush screw head.
    • Sand splinters and sharp edges with 120-grit paper.
  2. Fasten the layers

Fasten the layers with perpendicular grain and flush perimeter screws.

    • Rotate the top square so its grain crosses the bottom grain.
    • Align all four outside edges.
    • Clamp the layers tightly against a flat work surface.
    • Drill bottom layer pilots 1" deep through the clearance holes.
    • Drive 4 #8 × 2 1/2" screws until their heads sit flush.
  3. Check before trailer use

Confirm suitability, chock the trailer and center its flat jack foot on the block.

    • Confirm the support arrangement with the trailer and jack manufacturers.
    • Chock the trailer wheels before operating the jack.
    • Place one block on firm, level ground with its entire bottom supported.
    • Center the flat jack foot on the top face.
    • Lower the jack slowly under its manufacturer's operating instructions.
    • Stop immediately at any rocking, sinking, splitting or foot movement.
