Step by step

  1. Shape and smooth the trim

Shape the mitered returns and sand the prepared blanks before assembly.

    • Mark the 45° miters on the front edging and matching returns.
    • Support each molding against the miter saw fence with a sacrificial backer.
    • Saw each marked miter with the piece clamped clear of the blade.
    • Dry-fit the matching corners on a flat bench.
    • Sand the show faces through 120-grit to 180-grit.
    • Ease sharp edges without rounding the mating joints.
  2. Attach the internal cleats

Fasten the seat, foot and top cleats while their supporting panels lie accessible.

    • Lay each support panel inside-face upward on a padded bench.
    • Clamp each cleat at the position shown in the assembly view.
    • Drill 3 clearance holes through each cleat into matching pilot holes.
    • Drive the 2" screws through the cleats into the panels.
    • Check the flush bearing edges with a straightedge.
  3. Assemble the bench base

Build the plinth-supported lower shell and laminate the seat separately.

    • Clamp the front and rear plinth supports beneath the bottom platform.
    • Fasten the bottom platform to both plinth supports.
    • Clamp the two outer panels and middle support square on the bottom.
    • Fasten the three supports through the underside of the bottom.
    • Spread a thin glue film between the two seat layers.
    • Clamp the seat sandwich flat between padded cauls until cured.
  4. Fit the seat and shell

Secure the seat from below, then attach the tall sides and rear attachment rails.

    • Center the cured seat sandwich on the three lower supports.
    • Drive the 1 1/4" screws upward through the lower seat cleats.
    • Stand the tall sides on the seat with a helper.
    • Clamp temporary diagonal braces across the tall shell.
    • Fasten the foot cleats downward into the seat.
    • Fasten the rear attachment rails between the tall sides.
  5. Attach the back and cap

Attach the spaced pine backing boards from behind and secure the cap from below.

    • Space the vertical back boards with 1/16" spacers.
    • Clamp their lower ends flush with the plinth bottoms.
    • Drill one centered screw hole at each of the three horizontal supports.
    • Fasten every board from behind without gluing its long edges.
    • Center the plywood cap above the tall sides.
    • Drive the 1 1/4" cap screws upward through the top cleats.
  6. Apply the edging and trim

Glue and pin the flat face trim, wrapped plinth, solid edging and cove returns.

    • Dry-fit the plinth, edging, upright faces, fascia and cove returns.
    • Shave any gapped miter with the miter saw before gluing.
    • Spread a thin glue film only on the contacting surfaces.
    • Clamp the trim with the corners and reveals aligned.
    • Pin the trim with a hammer and nail set.
    • Fill the recessed brad holes with stain-compatible filler.
  7. Stain and protect the wood

Apply the two stain colors and a compatible clear protective finish.

    • Sand filled areas smooth with 180-grit abrasive.
    • Mask the golden backing from the darker frame.
    • Apply warm golden stain to the back boards.
    • Apply dark walnut stain to the remaining exposed wood.
    • Apply compatible clear coats after the stain has dried.
    • Allow the finish to cure fully before installation.
  8. Anchor the built-in shell

Secure both attachment rails to confirmed structural backing before the bench is used.

    • Confirm sound wood studs and concealed service locations behind the drywall.
    • Clear conflicting baseboard from the footprint before positioning the shell.
    • Position the shell level with a helper and solid packing where needed.
    • Mark two confirmed studs across each attachment rail.
    • Drill two vertically separated pilot holes per stud through each rail and backing.
    • Drive the eight 4" structural screws into the confirmed wood studs.
