Step by step
Shape the guard half-laps
Route complementary half-laps before assembling any parts.
- Mark each 1 1/2"-long lap from the cut drawing.
- Clamp each precut board flat on a sacrificial workbench surface.
- Secure a straight-sided routing jig over each marked lap.
- Set the router depth stop to 3/8" from the working face.
- Route each recess in shallow passes with a straight bit.
- Dry-fit each slat into both matching rail recesses.
Smooth every accessible edge
Prepare the shaped parts with smooth edges and splinter-free faces before assembly.
- Confirm the actual mattress measures 38" × 75" and is at most 6" thick.
- Support each precut part flat on a stable workbench.
- Ease all exposed edges with a sanding block.
- Sand the faces and entry edges with 180-grit abrasive.
- Remove all sanding dust.
Assemble the low platform
Join the fifteen slats to three parallel sleepers on a flat indoor floor.
- Arrange the 3 sleepers parallel on a flat indoor floor.
- Position the outer sleeper faces 38 1/2" apart.
- Center the third sleeper between the outer sleepers.
- Space the 15 slats evenly with the end slats flush.
- Clamp the slats square across the sleepers.
- Drive 2 flush 1 1/2" screws into each sleeper at every slat.
Assemble the slatted guards
Glue all five slatted guard frames and attach the external stiffeners to the long guards.
- Arrange each guard flat on a protected workbench.
- Spread wood glue evenly across both faces of every half-lap.
- Clamp the seated laps flat with protective cauls.
- Allow the glue to cure for its full label time.
- Clamp 2 external stiffeners behind each long guard.
- Drive the specified flush 2" screws into the stiffeners through pilot holes.
Attach the long guards
Fasten the long guards to the outside of the platform while retaining the centered entry.
- Position the back guard against the rear sleeper.
- Align its ends flush with the sleeper ends.
- Clamp the two front guards against the front sleeper.
- Measure a 24" clear opening between the front guards.
- Drill the lower pilot holes 1/2" above the floor.
- Drive the flush 1 1/2" screws from outside into the sleepers.
Close both bed ends
Tie both slatted end guards to the corner stiffeners and all three sleepers.
- Position each 43" end guard across the sleeper ends and corner stiffeners.
- Clamp the end guards flush with the long guard tops.
- Drill the indicated pilot holes through the end guards.
- Drive the specified flush 2" screws into each corner stiffener.
- Drive one flush 1 1/2" screw into each sleeper end.
- Check every corner for movement.
Finish the exposed wood
Apply an indoor finish and allow its full cure before introducing bedding.
- Inspect every exposed edge and screw head by touch.
- Smooth any remaining rough spots with 180-grit abrasive.
- Remove dust from all surfaces and slat gaps.
- Apply water-based polyurethane according to its label.
- Allow the finish to cure fully before fitting the mattress.
Fit and inspect the mattress
Assess the mattress fit, slat openings, entry and guard stability before allowing use.
- Center the 38" × 75" mattress on the slatted platform.
- Check the nominal 1/4" perimeter clearance for hazardous gaps.
- Verify at least 7 3/4" of guard remains above a 6" mattress.
- Place the bed clear of walls, cords, heaters and other trapping hazards.
- Check every guard slat, glued lap and fastener for looseness.
- Supervise the child's first entries and exits.
