Step by step

  1. Smooth the panels

Sand the cut-list panels and dry-fit the box before fastening.

    • Sand the panel faces lightly with a 150-grit random orbital sander.
    • Ease the exposed edges with the same abrasive.
    • Arrange the short ends between the front and back.
    • Check the wall assembly against the bottom panel.
  2. Join the four walls

Clamp the walls square and screw the front and back into both end panels.

    • Clamp the front and back against the short ends on a flat bench.
    • Mark each screw line 3/8" from the front and back panel ends.
    • Mark screws 1 1/2" and 3 3/4" above each panel’s lower edge.
    • Drill 1/8" pilot holes into the end panels with the cordless drill.
    • Enlarge the outer-panel holes to 3/16" with a shallow countersink.
    • Drive the eight 1 1/2" screws until their heads sit flush.
  3. Attach the bottom

Invert the wall assembly and screw the bottom onto all four wall edges.

    • Invert the walls on a flat, padded bench.
    • Clamp the bottom flush with all four outside wall faces.
    • Mark screw lines 3/8" inside all four bottom edges.
    • Mark long-edge screws at 2", 6" and 10" from one end.
    • Mark short-edge screws at 2 1/2" and 5 1/2" from the front.
    • Fasten the bottom with ten 1 1/2" screws through prepared holes.
  4. Check the finished box

Set the box upright and inspect its edges and fasteners before use.

    • Set the box upright on a flat surface.
    • Inspect every joint for gaps or split plywood.
    • Smooth any remaining splinters with the reserved abrasive.
    • Wipe away sanding dust with a dry cloth.
