Step by step

  1. Shape and drill the joinery

Prepare the post chamfers, support notches and cross-dowel connections on the bench.

    • Clamp each post to a bench with its working edge clear.
    • Route a 1/4" chamfer along each of the four long post edges.
    • Mark each support notch 1 1/2" wide with its shoulder 5" above the floor.
    • Shape the notches with a handsaw and chisel against a clamped guide.
    • Drill the 5/8" cross-dowel bores through the rails against a backing block.
    • Drill the 13/32" bolt passages with a perpendicular guide at the marked centers.
  2. Smooth and finish the components

Finish the separate components in warm brown before assembly, keeping all joints removable.

    • Apply matching veneer edging to the four exposed headboard edges.
    • Sand the components with 120-grit abrasive along the grain.
    • Smooth the components with 180-grit abrasive.
    • Apply a warm brown stain to the visible components.
    • Apply the clear finish according to its label.
    • Allow the finish to cure fully before assembly.
  3. Assemble the two bed ends

Build the front and rear end assemblies flat, including the rear headboard and its separate upper rail.

    • Lay each pair of posts on padded supports.
    • Position the lower rails with their top edges 12" above the post bottoms.
    • Tighten the lower rail bolts into their cross-dowels.
    • Attach the headboard cleats with their bottom edges 24" above the post bottoms.
    • Screw the headboard to its two cleats.
    • Bolt the separate head rail above the panel with a 1" clear gap.
  4. Join the lower frame

Join the end assemblies with the removable side rails and attach the slat ledgers.

    • Stand the end assemblies upright with a helper.
    • Bolt the side rails between the posts.
    • Clamp each ledger with its top edge 10 1/2" above the floor.
    • Screw each ledger to its side rail at the seven marked positions.
    • Compare the two outside-post diagonals.
    • Tighten the frame bolts after the diagonals match.
  5. Install the center support

Fit the bolted center beam and its three floor-contact support legs.

    • Place the center beam between the two lower end rails.
    • Fit the four beam bolts with washers and cross-dowels.
    • Position the three leg centers 16", 42" and 68" from the front outside face.
    • Seat the beam fully on each notched leg shoulder.
    • Drive the two retaining screws through each leg cheek.
    • Tighten the beam bolts after all three legs contact the floor.
  6. Install the removable slats

Fasten fourteen removable slats across the ledgers and center beam.

    • Place the first and last slats flush with the ledger ends.
    • Distribute the remaining slats with equal gaps of about 2 5/16".
    • Pilot the three marked retaining holes in each slat.
    • Drive one flush screw into each of the three supports.
    • Check the complete support surface with a straightedge.
  7. Bolt on the canopy rails

Complete the uncovered canopy with four removable rails and staggered corner bolts.

    • Support each canopy rail with a helper.
    • Position each canopy rail with its bottom edge 79" above the floor.
    • Insert the staggered corner bolts through their washers.
    • Tighten the bolts into the cross-dowels without crushing the wood.
    • Check the posts for plumb and the canopy diagonals for equality.
    • Recheck every lower frame connection.
  8. Hang curtains and inspect

Tie lightweight curtains directly to the canopy rails and inspect the completed frame before use.

    • Tie two lightweight curtain panels to each canopy rail.
    • Adjust the finished curtain drop to leave at least 3" above the floor.
    • Secure the fabric tabs without long dangling ties.
    • Open the curtains to keep both bedside exits clear.
    • Inspect all bed bolts and slat screws for looseness.
    • Resolve the stated size conflicts before placing a mattress.
