Step by step

  1. Shape the sloped framing

Make the rake cuts and rafter seats on supported stock before any assembly.

    • Support each marked blank on stable sawhorses.
    • Clamp a straightedge for the sloping plate and stud cuts.
    • Cut the marked rake angles with the circular saw.
    • Mark each rafter seat to match the 3 1/2" cap width.
    • Saw the birdsmouth shoulders without overcutting the corners.
    • Finish each birdsmouth corner with the hand saw.
  2. Prepare the window pane

Drill oversized mounting holes in the supported acrylic before assembly.

    • Support the acrylic on a clean sacrificial backing board.
    • Clamp the pane with padded C-clamps.
    • Mark the eight clearance holes 3/8" from the appropriate edges.
    • Drill each 1/4" hole slowly with an acrylic-compatible bit.
    • Ease the hole edges without enlarging the bearing faces.
  3. Prepare the gravel pad

Establish a level, drained gravel base before placing the skids.

    • Mark a 6' × 5' pad clear of obstructions.
    • Compact a 4" gravel layer on firm, drained ground.
    • Space the skid outside faces 4' apart.
    • Level the skid tops across both directions.
  4. Assemble the floor frame

Screw the rim and joist frame together over the leveled skids.

    • Clamp the outside frame to 4' × 3'.
    • Position the intermediate joist centers at 16" and 32".
    • Square the frame using matching diagonal measurements.
    • Drive the rim screws into each joist end.
    • Drive the opposed rim-to-skid toe screws.
  5. Fasten the plywood floor

Fasten the floor sheet before trimming its perimeter flush with the frame.

    • Position the whole sheet over the floor frame.
    • Fasten the sheet to every rim and joist.
    • Mark the perimeter from the frame.
    • Clamp a straightedge along each marked edge.
    • Trim from the sheet edge with the circular saw set 1/8" deeper than the plywood.
  6. Frame the front wall

Assemble the front wall flat on level supports beside the floor.

    • Support the wall flat on level sawhorses beside the floor.
    • Mark the regular stud layout at 16" centers from one end.
    • Clamp the plates against the stud ends.
    • Seat the doubled header on both jack studs.
    • Fasten the kings, jacks, header and cripples.
    • Square the frame before tightening the remaining screws.
  7. Sheathe the front wall

Fasten the whole wall sheet while the frame is flat, then cut its opening and edges.

    • Measure the opening framing from the framing beneath the sheet edges.
    • Fasten the whole sheet to every listed framing member.
    • Transfer the opening measurements from the sheet edges.
    • Snap chalk lines between the opening marks.
    • Drill a 1/2" starter hole just inside each opening corner.
    • Cut the opening with the jigsaw and the outside edges along marked guides.
  8. Raise the front wall

Raise the sheathed wall with a helper, plumb it, brace it and screw it to the floor frame.

    • Lift the sheathed wall upright with a helper.
    • Align the bottom plate with the floor edge.
    • Plumb the wall with a level.
    • Brace the wall diagonally with reusable lengths from the spare 2x4.
    • Drive the bottom screws through the floor into the rim.
  9. Frame the back wall

Assemble the back wall flat on level supports beside the floor.

    • Support the wall flat on level sawhorses beside the floor.
    • Mark the regular stud layout at 16" centers from one end.
    • Clamp the plates against the stud ends.
    • Fasten each stud through both plates.
    • Square the frame before tightening the remaining screws.
  10. Sheathe the back wall

Fasten the whole wall sheet while the frame is flat, then cut its opening and edges.

    • Position the whole sheet over the flat wall frame.
    • Fasten the sheet to every stud and both plates.
    • Mark the outside edges directly from the framing.
    • Clamp a straightedge along the marked perimeter.
    • Trim from a sheet edge with the circular saw set 1/8" deeper than the plywood.
  11. Raise the back wall

  12. Frame the left wall

    • Support the wall flat on level sawhorses beside the floor.
    • Mark the regular stud layout at 16" centers from one end.
    • Clamp the plates against the stud ends.
    • Fasten each stud through both plates.
    • Square the frame before tightening the remaining screws.
  13. Sheathe the left wall

  14. Raise the left wall

    • Fasten the end studs to the standing walls.
  15. Frame the right wall

Assemble the right wall flat on level supports beside the floor.

  16. Sheathe the right wall
